If you have Bipolar Disorder, the information is this video is important to know and can dramatically influence overall health. It’s very important that we educate each other in the Bipolar community and shed light on topics that aren’t widely discussed. The impact that Bipolar symptoms have on our bodies and overall health is a lot bigger than most people realize. We’ve all heard the saying “stress is a killer” right? The “stress” that mania, depression, or anger puts on our bodies has been documented to reduce the lifespan of those with Bipolar by an average of 10 years! That’s right up there with heave smokers. There are specific biochemical reactions that happen in our bodies when we go through stress. This can affect our heart health, our sleep, desire to eat, blood pressure, and so much more.
So what can be done to reduce Bipolar’s affect on our health? It ultimately comes down to a comprehensive treatment program and self-awareness of the symptoms we’re experiencing. If we can treat the Bipolar Disorder FIRST (with medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, etc), the frequency or severity of symptoms is greatly reduced. Being aware of our emotions and symptoms before they get out of control can prevent an episode from progressing.
In this video, we are going to discuss a specific biochemical called “Cortisol” which gets released during our “flight or fight” responses, and how it impacts the body. I know this ins’t the most “positive” topic to discuss, but its importance can’t be stressed enough.
For many years mental illness simply was a “taboo” topic in society and only talked about among family members – behind closed doors.
